For non-US Authors EIN Number and Tax Information

Here's how to get your Tax Information Setup Correctly so you can sell books on Amazon

This is for non-US authors so Amazon won't withhold tax if your country has a Tax Treaty with the US.

Non-US Tax and EIN Number
How to Comply with Amazons Tax Requirements

There's the simple steps to do what so many find confusing :)
If you see this in your account...

or this...

Then you need to go through the following steps...
1  Download the Application for Employer Identification Number (EIN) here... http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fss4.pdf
Fill out the sections that are applicable to you so you know what to say when you ring the IRS
If you need more help filling in the form download this form... http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iss4.pdf
This first step is to make it easier when you ring so you don't have to think what to say.
2  Ring this number 267 941 1099 and tell the person on the line that you need an EIN number
When they ask you what it's for - tell them you write books and sell them through Amazon
3  When they give you the EIN Number write it down and read it back to them to ensure you have the correct information
4  Next - Click on the link in your KDP Account to complete your tax information.
The first screen will look like this...

Click continue
5 This screen will appear...

Click YES for electronic consent and Yes for electronic receipt
Then click continue
6 This screen will appear...

Click No and then continue
7 This screen appears next...

Click continue
8 Next screen looks like this...

Enter your details either your first and last names as an individual or your organization name and choose whether your mailing address is the same as your permanent address or not.
Then click continue
9 If you have a different mailing address this screen will appear next...

Fill in your mailing address and click continue
10 This is the next screen...

Choose your type of ownership (this particular account I have set up as a partnership)
Click continue
11 This is the next screen...

This is where you will enter your EIN number that you got at steps 2 - 3
Click continue
12 This is what you will see...

Leave everything blank and click continue
13 This is the next screen...

Click YES and then continue
14 and this screen will appear...

Enter your EIN number
Click 'this is my EIN number'
Click continue
15 and you will see this screen...

Click NO and continue
16 This is the next screen...

Select your country (and if it has a Tax Treaty with the US, Amazon won't deduct withholding tax)
Click continue
17 This is what you will see...

Click continue to update your info
18 ...and you will see this screen...

Click continue...
19 This is what you will see...

Check it and click Submit
20 You will see this next...

Click Finish and you will see this...

That's it - You're Done!
Have a coffee, a piece of chocolate and pat yourself on the back :)

NOW - if you had any problems when submitting the info to Amazon it will be because... what you entered in these forms wasn't EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE IRS HAS - so be careful to get your details correct when entering them otherwise you see this screen...

...and you will get an email like this...

And you will need to go back through the process more carefully.
One good thing about Amazon is... if you did enter your information incorrectly, they will reset your deadline to get the info correctly uploaded (if they've already given you a deadline for doing so)
Don't mess around though - get Stuff Sorted ASAP because the Best Time is Always NOW!

  1. Thank you so much for post this it helped me so much as I filled out my tax interview with KDP.

I hope to find something similar for the new tax interview for Createspace because that doesn't make any sense.
